We help early childhood programs support young children’s math learning by building the confidence and skills of educators and families to provide high-quality, developmentally appropriate math instruction aligned with state preschool, Head Start, and kindergarten standards. Our professional learning workshops, coaching, and technical assistance are grounded in cognitive and developmental science and family engagement research.
How We Help
Strong early math skills prepare children for success in kindergarten and set the foundation for future academic success. We deliver research-based math support directly to early educators and families, helping them build their confidence and skills for supporting children’s development of math skills in meaningful, connected ways—both in the classroom and at home.
Our signature service, Early Math Professional Learning Workshops and Coaching Cycles, is a comprehensive system of professional learning and coaching for early childhood educators and instructional coaches to improve math instruction and family–school partnerships focused on extending children’s math learning beyond the classroom. The service includes three professional learning cycles across the school year.
Our additional workshop and research services include the following:
- Math-Focused Family–School Partnership Workshops for Early Educators
- Early Math Workshops for Families
- Workshops on Enhancing Math Instruction in Early Childhood Classrooms
- Cross-Grade Professional Learning Communities
- Research and Technical Assistance

“This program gave us the language and confidence to be more intentional with math during play and daily routines. Instead of just repeating skills our child has already mastered, we’re now looking for meaningful ways to build on them.”

Connecting Research With Practice
Research consistently shows that early math skills are among the strongest predictors of later academic achievement—including reading and math achievement in high school. But many early educators and families report lacking the tools and confidence to support young children’s math development. At WestEd, we translate rigorous research into actionable strategies for educators and families. Our approach ensures that high-quality instructional practices and family engagement efforts are grounded in evidence, aligned with learning standards, and designed to improve outcomes for all children.
